Beginner Track

Module One

Meetings Gone Wild!

Are your meetings chaotic, long and boring? Rife with arguments and dissension? Learn how parliamentary procedure can shorten meeting time and improve effectiveness.  Some role playing and group work required.

Module Two

Help! Our Bylaws Are A Mess!

The bylaws are second only to your Articles of Incorporation in authority over your organization. What should the bylaws include? What should the bylaws NOT include? Groups will be given a set of bylaws to review and correct as part of this module.

Module Three

I’ve Just Been Appointed to Chair A Committee. Now What?

Most work in organizations occurs in committees. Yet, few people know how the rules governing committees differ from those governing the assembly.  This module will teach participants how to improve committee functioning.  This module involves role playing.

Intermediate Track

Module One

“Keep it Moving!”

Meetings can become quite chaotic if motions are made when they are not allowed or members don’t know what motions to make in order to do something. Robert’s Rules of Order has a systematic method, called precedence of motions, to determine what motions can be offered and when they are in order. This session will cover the classes of motions, precedence of motions, and an overview of the most popular motions used in a meeting. Participants will learn how to avoid the pitfalls of getting stuck and not knowing how to move ahead.

Module Two

“Discuss. Debate. Deliberate.”

Even though the majority rules when it comes to making a decision, we can’t get to the majority’s decision without engaging in discussion in an orderly manner. Participants will gain an understanding of the general rules for assigning the floor, rules governing preference in recognition, and when a member may be interrupted. In the end, it’s all about decorum.

Module Three

“The Rules of the Game”

No organization should try to conduct business without some type of rules in place. Over and above Robert’s Rules of Order, an organization should understand that their bylaws prevail. Learn about the various type of information that is and/or should be provided in the bylaws and what to do when something is unclear or not covered in the bylaws or other governing documents.

 Beginner and Intermediate

Joint Session

Module Four
“Oh, Off to the Convention We Go!”

The officers are in place. The delegates are here. The candidates for election are ready. But, how do we start the convention? What comes first? This session will prepare you for your convention and help you understand what business should be transacted to begin the convention and how typical business is conducted throughout the entire convention. Participants will also hear about some unique quandaries that have happened in some conventions and how they were handled.

Preparation for the NAP Membership Exam

In order to join NAP, one has to take and pass a membership exam.

Participants who select this track will attend either beginner or intermediate modules in the morning, then after lunch, will receive four hours of instruction on the NAP membership exam. At the end of the class, those wishing to do so will pay the fee and take the exam. Space is limited.
